As an early birthday present to myself I thought I would take the unique opportunity while in Kyoto to be dressed up as a Maiko - a Geisha in training.
Through some broken English and some charades the first lady told me to undress and put on a thin cotton robe and socks. After heading upstairs to the make up area, a lady prepared me by putting my hair up in a net and applying a very thick sticky wax/gel to my face as a base. She then slapped white make-up all over my face, neck and upper back, slapping it on like i was a wall being painted... She was super rough when applying the make-up, especially with the eyeliner.
Once my make-up was done, I was ushered into the next room where another lady was to dress me. First I had to pick my Kimono...there were so many different colours and patterns. Of course I went with pink :) The dressing basically consisted of layers and layers of material wrapped around me like a parcel, and viola! I was a Geisha.
The next step was hair, up to another level where there were a heap of wigs lined up. It was amazing how it really completed the look once I had it on. Next it was photo time.... I don't handle trying to be model like and posing very well. I felt quite awkward, luckily it wasn't for very long.
I had the opportunity to get more photos on my own camera. Unfortunately Doodles was still out riding his bike around town because the lady had told us the wrong time, so he wasn't due back for another half hour. The photographer was lovely enough to take some shots for me...more awkwardness.
It was time to go back downstairs to get cleaned up. Because of the type of make up you can not wet your face with water..instead you rub baby oil all over your face. After about 15 minutes I was back to me again.
